Trinity Is the Real Hero of the Matrix

Trinity is the hero of the matrix

What if your reality wasn’t real at all? What if you were a pawn in someone else’s game?

Trinity Asks The Question

I was looking for an answer. It’s the question that drives us, Neo. It’s the question that brought you here. You know the question, just as I did.

Trinity, The Matrix (1999)

You cannot help but wonder if the Wachowksi brothers (now Lana and Lilly Wachowski) realized how dependent we would be on technology two short decades after they released The Matrix. Nowadays, you cannot go anywhere without seeing someone staring into their phone. Factories and other businesses defer to automation over human workers. Self check-out areas have replaced people in stores, restaurants, and even car dealerships. Let’s not forget about self-driving cars. Are we controlling technology or is it controlling us?

Somehow it seems that we are willing to sacrifice human contact for the sake of convenience. People troll social media feeds and say hurtful things they would not have said in person. Rather than listen or reach out to others, people hide behind technology as if it is a mask, leaving them blinded to what really matters.

All I can say is thank goodness for Trinity!

Trinity Finds the Answer

Trinity isn’t the sort of woman to accept the status quo. She knew the world needed saving so she took action. After breaking free from The Matrix, she joined Morpheus as second-in-command to lead the rebellion. As a hacker and activist, she used her skills to fight back and free others from an artificial world. It is then that she sets out to recruit Neo.

Trinity: My name’s Trinity.
Neo: *The* Trinity? Who cracked the IRS d-base?
Trinity: That was a long time ago.
Neo: I just thought… you were a guy.
Trinity: Most guys do.

The Matrix (1999)

Even Neo, aka “The One”, assumed someone who was strong, smart, and successful had to be a man. He thought wrong. Not only was Trinity a genius hacker, she was one hell of a soldier. Lithe and agile with catlike reflexes, she took hand-to-hand combat to a whole new level. Before you put a label on what a woman can and cannot do, I’d like to see you cross paths with a Trinity in your life.

Trinity Saves the Day

People assume that Neo is the hero of the story. After all, Neo is the one who takes down Agent Smith and his cronies. Still, he would have been unable to achieve what he did without Trinity by his side. Trinity chose to take the red pill long before Neo did. Neo became part of the cause only after Trinity recruited him. When he was ready to give up, she made him go back to save Morpheus. She fought by his side. More importantly, when he lay dead, Trinity brought him back to life.

Neo, I’m not afraid anymore. The Oracle told me that I would fall in love and that that man… the man that I loved would be The One. So you see, you can’t be dead. You can’t be… because I love you. You hear me? I love you.

Trinity, The Matrix (1999)

Maybe it’s a bit romantic to think that a woman can save a man with a kiss (or vice versa), but that does not mean the Wachowskis put their stock in fairy tales. They simply remind us that love is its own power. When you dare to love, you bring meaning and hope into the world. With your blinders off, light can finally shine on the things that really matter. In a chaotic world, we need that clarity more than ever.
